Marketed as a “cool treat for dogs," The Bear & The Rat, Denver, Colo., makes a yogurt-based “ice cream” for dogs. The flavors are: Bacon Peanut Barker (bacon and peanut butter flavors), Banana Peanut Barker (banana and peanut butter flavors), and Pumpkin (made with real pumpkin).

The yogurt-based frozen treat contains 15 million live & active probiotic cultures per pint. It's made with nonfat yogurt, water and natural flavors. It’s free of corn, wheat, gluten, soy and artificial flavors, preservatives and colors. The bacon flavor contains 90 calories per 3.5-ounce serving; the banana flavor contains 45 calories per serving. The company said the probiotics help with doggie breath, tummy troubles and overall immunity.

The frozen treat is produced with as few ingredients as possible in an organic ice cream facility for people. The company uses a co-packer and co-produces the product using its own employees in the ice cream facility.

It’s sold in independent pet stores and pet chains nationally. Pints retail for $7.99 to $9.99 and 4-Packs retail for $8.99 to $10.99.

The company plans to launch a co-branded version of the frozen treat for dogs next year with a global ice cream company for mass retailer's (grocery chains and big box pet stores.) The company was featured on ABC's Television’s Shark Tank in 2012.
