    Ice cream month

Best new flavors and ice cream products for Ice Cream Month

    By Sarah M. Kennedy
    July 10, 2014

New ice cream products and flavors are popping up everywhere, just in time for National Ice Cream Month. Dairy Foods' editors highlighted some of our favorite summer flavors and new releases from this year:

Baskin-Robbins July Flavor of the Month

Baskin-Robbins, Canton, Mass., in addition to its free waffle cone promotion (learn more here) has a new flavor of the month for July — Oreo ’N Cake Batter. The new flavor features cake-flavored ice cream, Oreo cookie pieces and a chocolate cake batter ribbon.

Baskin-Robbins is also featuring an Oreo cookie cake which is drizzled in dark chocolate, adorned with a circle of Oreo cookies on top and edged with a fudge border. Both cakes are now available at participating Baskin-Robbins locations nationwide and can also be ordered through Baskin-Robbins’ new online cake ordering website.

Additional Oreo cookie-themed frozen treats available at participating Baskin-Robbins shops this month include:

    • Oreo ’N cake batter milkshake – The Flavor of the Month blended with milk and simple syrup.
    • Oreo ice cream cookie sandwiches – These are made-to-order with a guest’s favorite ice cream flavor sandwiched between two Oreo cookie wafers. The sandwiches are also available in pre-made 6-packs at participating Baskin-Robbins shops nationwide.
    • Oreo 31 Below Line-Up – A variety of 31 Below frozen treats featuring vanilla soft serve blended with Oreo cookie pieces. Options include Oreo ’n chocolate blended with hot fudge, Oreo ’n caramel blended with caramel praline topping and classic Oreo cookies ’n cream.

    New locally-sourced ice cream flavors

Tillamook, Ore.-Tillamook County Creamery has two new ice cream flavors — Oregon Blueberry Patch and Oregon Hazelnut Salted Caramel. These latest flavors are made with blueberries and hazelnuts locally sourced from Oregon.

Oregon Blueberry Patch is made with Oregon grown blueberries and blueberry ice cream. The suggested retail price is $4.99 to $5.99 per 56-ounce container. It’s available in the Pacific Northwest and parts of Utah, Idaho and Arizona in the brand’s new packaging.

Oregon Hazelnut Salted Caramel is made with local roasted Oregon hazelnuts and hazelnut ice cream mixed with salted caramel. The suggested retail price is $4.99 to $5.99 per 56-ounce container. It’s available in the Pacific Northwest and parts of Utah, Idaho and Arizona in the brand’s new packaging.

Godiva's new soft serve ice cream

Godiva Chocolatier, New York, launched premium soft serve ice cream. Now available nationwide, Godiva's soft serve is made with milk and cream and incorporates authentic, premium Belgian ingredients. The soft serve is available in three different flavors: dark chocolate, white chocolate vanilla bean and swirl. Customers can enjoy the new soft serve in a variety of premium Belgian waffle cones, each one dipped in either milk or dark chocolate, or in a traditional five ounce cup.

Godiva’s soft serve is available nationwide and retails for about $6.

    Summer ice cream flavors

Holland, Mich.-based Hudsonville Ice Cream introduced its latest limited edition seasonal flavor: Summer Celebration is made with three flavors — vanilla ice cream, raspberry sherbet and blueberry sherbet — blended in a patriotic color scheme.

Also new this summer for limited edition flavors: Grand Hotel Pecan Ball — the new flavor replicates the flavor of the pecan ball dessert from the famous Grand Hotel in Mackinac Island. It’s made with vanilla ice cream, Grand Hotel fudge and premium pecan pieces.

Hudsonville Creamery & Ice Cream is the largest manufacturer of branded ice cream in Michigan.

    Syracuse University Ice Cream

Otto’s Cupcake Ice Cream, produced by Perry's Ice Cream Co., Akron, N.Y., is now available in Tops Markets and other grocery stores selling Perry’s ice cream. The flavor was launched last fall, and was available only at the Syracuse University Dome and at the few ice cream stands that are open during the winter months.
The flavor is named after the S.U. team mascot, Otto, and was developed by Eilish Mitchell, a 2012 Syracuse University graduate who works for Perry’s Ice Cream in the quality assurance and research & development department. The flavor features chocolate cupcake ice cream with orange colored frosting swirls and chocolate cupcake pieces.

Consumers can purchase Otto’s Cupcake at the S.U. Carrier Dome, independent ice cream stands, and retail locations across New York State, Western Pennsylvania, Northeastern Ohio, Vermont and Virginia.

Mitchell’s Ice Cream launches in Chicago stores

Chicago-based Mitchell's ice cream is now offering eight super-premium ice cream flavors in grocers throughout Chicagoland. The company is using the original recipe from 1931, which features ice cream with toppings like rich dark chocolate chips, caramel and fudge.

The pints are now available throughout Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana in major grocery chains including Jewel-Osco and independent grocers including Strack & Van Til, Ultra Foods, Sunset Foods, Pete’s, Valli Produce and Angelo Caputo’s. The suggested retail price ranges from $3.49 to $4.49 for all eight flavors:

    • Banana Chocolate Chip: Features dark chocolate chips with all-natural banana ice cream.
    • Chocolate Chip: Features dark chocolate chips with Madagascar bourbon vanilla ice cream.
    • Chocolate Chocolate Chip: Features dark chocolate chips with chocolate ice cream.
    • Mint Chocolate Chip Cookie: Features mint ice cream with crumbled Oreo sandwich cookies and dark chocolate chips.
    • Mocha Chocolate Chip: Features mocha ice cream and dark chocolate chips.
    • Vanilla Bean: Made with Madagascar bourbon vanilla and vanilla beans.
    • Vanilla Bean Caramel Ribbon: Made with thick caramel sauce ribboned throughout the vanilla bean ice cream, with an extra layer of caramel on top.
    • Vanilla Bean Fudge Ribbon: Made with hot fudge sauce ribboned throughout the vanilla bean ice cream, with an extra layer of fudge sauce on top.

Breyers new frozen dairy dessert flavors

Breyers Blasts!, a brand of Unilever, Englewood Cliffs, N.J., added two new flavors to its line — Raspberry Creamsicle, featuring raspberry sherbet and vanilla frozen dairy dessert; and Sara Lee Strawberry Cheesecake, featuring Sara Lee strawberry cheesecake pieces and a strawberry swirl in cheesecake-flavored frozen dairy dessert.

The two new flavors join the other 18 varieties, including Birthday Blast!, Girl Scout Cookies Thin Mints, Oreo Cookies & Cream and Reese's Peanut Butter Cups.
Raspberry Creamsicle is available exclusively at Walmart locations.

    Watermelon-flavored frozen dessert

Rita's Italian Ice, Trevose, Pa., introduced a new flavor for summer, Watermelon Chip Cream Ice. The Cream Ice flavor features Watermelon Cream Ice mixed with chocolate chips. The frozen dessert is available upon request at Rita’s franchise stores.

    Ice cream toppings

Orrville, Ohio-based Smucker's introduced new ice cream toppings. The Simple Delight Toppings are available in seven new flavors: Salted caramel, chocolate coconut, dark chocolate, hot fudge, Magic Shell chocolate pretzel, Magic Shell rainbow sherbet, and Microwavable hot dark chocolate.
