Detectamet has launched a new detectable plastic product for the food industry. The new Detectable Pallet Wrap offers a less risky means of final packaging for pallet handling in food warehouse storage and shipping.

A pallet overwrap can have several functions that are of general benefit and of specific food safety benefit. A wrapped pallet is less likely to be attacked by insects, or damaged by water, and is more likely to arrive as clean as when it was despatched. A film wrapped pallet is more likely to be stable, especially when there are a variety of sizes of packs and boxes, and there is less likelihood of pilfering and any deliberate damage would be easier to identify.

The company’s Managing Director Angela Musson said, “Even with all these benefits the food industry has become aware of the risk of discarded wrap accidentally getting into the food processing chain undetected.” She went on to explain, “We were asked by a number of food processors and ingredient suppliers to look at ways in which we could introduce detectability to the film.”

The new Detectable Pallet Wrap has been tested and found to offer good levels of detectability in metal detectors. In trials by experienced wrap users the film was described as offering a more resilient strength that was less likely to tear.

“Following discussions with the food industry a distinctive blue colouring has added a visual identification of contamination to the metal detectability,” Musson said. “And the greater film thickness reduces tears in mid wrap for greater efficiency in despatch.”

There are two sizes of roll. The hand wrapper size of 400mm wide by 200 metres long and for wrapping machines the roll is 500mm by 800 metres.
