After years of riding in the slow lane, the retail milk category got a pandemic-related jump last year. But since COVID-19-related panic buying subsided and some normalcy returned in 2021, milk sales felt the gridlock once again. 

Chobani LLC said it believes college hunger is unacceptable and is joining forces with Swipe Out Hunger, a nonprofit addressing this issue, to tackle this problem.

Danone Institute North America, a not-for-profit established by White Plains, N.Y.- and Broomfield, Colo.-based Danone North America, announced the five winning teams of the "One Planet. One Health" Initiative — a grant program that promotes resilient and sustainable local food systems.

Berkeley, Calif.-based Perfect Day, a consumer biotechnology company and creator of animal-free “dairy,” says it partnered with Phoenix-based Villa Dolce to introduce “gelato” items to the foodservice industry.

Broomfield, Colo.- and White Plains, N.Y.-based Danone North America says it created plant-based “milk” that doesn’t taste like plants. 

Back in February 2020, Petaluma, Calif.-based Miyoko’s Creamery (Miyoko’s), a manufacturer of dairy alternatives, sued the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA).

Plant-based milk alternatives are the largest plant-based food category in North America and grew 5% last year.

A quick glance around any major retailer would reveal plant-based brands positioned as alternatives across all major dairy categories. What used to be seen by many as a fad has clearly gained some legs.

Hayward, Calif-based Three Trees Organics launched organic Oat & Seed “oatmilk.” A blend of three super seeds (flax, pumpkin and sunflower) with oats creates a creamy, delicious and nutrient-packed “oatmilk” without any vegetable oils, the company says.
