Dairy Foods to host two Membrane Technology Forum post-show events on July 17

    Membrane Technology Forum
    Membrane Technology Forum
    July 10, 2025

Dairy Foods will host two special educational sessions as a follow-up to the popular Membrane Technology Forum. Both events will take place virtually on July 17. Registration information for both sessions is listed below.

    11 a.m. EDT Session

Title: Membrane Technology Fundamentals: Membrane Basics & Applications

This presentation will cover fundamental concepts related to the use of membrane filtration in the food processing industry. After seeing the presentation, one should be equipped to converse with a variety of audiences about their needs for applications of membrane processing in their company, or for their projects. Establishing a shared vocabulary before engaging in a technical discussion on a complex topic is key to achieving more successful outcomes.

    Speaker Information

    Steve Beckman

    Manager-Davis-Dairy Plant, SDSU

Steve Beckman is the Manager of the Davis Dairy Plant and Institute for Dairy Ingredient Processing (IDIP) at South Dakota State University (SDSU) in Brookings, SD. He has been at SDSU since 2013, managing dairy and food related pilot-scale research within the Dairy Plant, and helping hundreds of students learn food processing principles. Currently, Steve is also a Doctoral student focusing on increasing efficiency of membrane fractionation processes applied to food and dairy streams. Prior to SDSU, Steve graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (B.S. Food Science & Technology) and Cornell University (M.S. Food Science, Dairy Chemistry) where he developed his passion for troubleshooting complex food processing issues. Part of his passion now is to inspire the next generation of professionals in the food processing industry, especially in relation to membrane fractionation and membrane technology.

     1 p.m. EDT Session

Title: The Future of Dairy Processing: Exploring the Cost-Effectiveness of Next-Generation Reverse Osmosis Sanitary Membranes

Advances in milk processing and changing customer preferences are driving growth in the dairy market. Today, dairy processors face challenges in achieving energy savings while also improving yields without compromising performance. Membrane filtration offers a versatile solution, and advanced technology may be necessary depending on the desired outcome. Next-generation Reverse Osmosis (RO) elements, designed with enhanced membrane chemistry and a larger active surface area, can help produce high-quality dairy products that meet customer expectations for both productivity and nutritional value while maximizing energy savings. These membranes can efficiently remove water from dairy streams, reducing product volume and leading to savings in transportation and storage costs, as well as lowering evaporator loads and energy expenses for powdered product production.
