    Food Safety for Dairy ProcessorsEquipment

New lab testing technology ensures food safety

    February 16, 2015

Salmonella solutions provide fast, accurate results for food safety

Bio-Rad’s Salmonella solutions provide fast, accurate and reliable results for food safety and environmental testing needs. The patented real-time PCR technology uses double-stranded DNA probes allowing for increased sensitivity and specificity, and next-day results. When combined with the iQ-Check Prep automation system, the iQ-Check Salmonella II PCR kit provides an easy-to-use, efficient and traceable testing solution.

Automated milk component analysis with somatic cell counting

Bentley’s new DairySpec Combi incorporates the latest technology in automated milk component analysis and somatic cell counting. The combo system is formed by connecting the DairySpec FT with a Somacount FC resulting in simultaneous results for milk component analysis and somatic cell counting.  This automated system has been engineered for dairy laboratories and processing facilities that require highly reliable and accurate instrumentation. Ranging in speeds from 100 to 300 samples per hour, this system provides efficiency, faster analysis and flexibility to increase testing speed as sample volume increases.  It’s also pre-calibrated to offer standard results such as fat, protein, lactose and solids.

New FT-NIR spectroscopy for dairy applications

Liquid milk products like whey, cream, whey concentrates and lactose concentrates  can easily be analyzed using FT-NIR spectroscopy. With Bruker’s new MPA-D: Simply One FT-NIR, the liquid samples are measured in transmission with a path length of 1 millimeter. This large path length, compared to mid-IR spectroscopy allows for the analysis of un-homogenized liquid dairy products as well as solid dairy products.

Antibiotic residue tests for the dairy industry

DSM’s Delvotest range of antibiotic residue tests are used at each stage of the supply chain, including farms, milk receiving and testing laboratories. It can detect major antibiotic residues in cow, goat and buffalo milk. The range includes larger kits for milk receiving and testing laboratories. This unique broad spectrum test is specifically designed to detect tetracyclines at very low levels to meet stringent export requirements.

Rapid yeast and mold count sample-ready plates

3M’s Petrifilm Rapid Yeast and Mold Count sample-ready plates simplify and accelerate detection, giving results in 48 hours. The test features a new indicator technology that makes colonies easier to interpret. These complete sample-ready plates also eliminate the need to prepare, purchase and store agar dishes. It can be used with both low- and high-water activity foods; and it eliminates the need for labor-intensive, multiple plate spread-plate technique.

Dumas analysis at low cost per sample

Foss’ Dumatec 8000 gives reliable Dumas analysis results at a low cost per sample  in just three minutes. The instrument helps to reduce the burden on lab resources and provide a safe working environment. It’s versatile for many sample types, and is easy enough for anyone to use — just weigh samples, add to auto sampler and let the sampler do the work. All operations are controlled through a computer, for easy handling of calibrations, traceability of data and report creation.

Detector tube system for laboratory air monitoring

Nextteq’s line of Gastec pumps and detector tubes measure airborne levels of various gases and vapors in over 600 applications, making it an ideal tool for gas detection in laboratories as well as laboratory health and safety.  The piston pump is easy to use, lightweight and rugged.  The direct-read length-of-stain tubes offer distinct lines of demarcation for easier viewing. The company’s Dosimeter tubes are direct-read, long-term sampling tubes that allow users to make time-weighted average measurements.

    QuickCheck Graphic Cryoscope

Page & Pedersen’s QuickCheck Graphic Cryoscope provides accurate information about more than milk. Freezing-point cryoscopes were developed as a rapid method to test milk for added water. The QC-IV/GR complies with internationally reviewed and recommended methods for that application. The real-time freezing-point graph gives greater insight into effectiveness of lactose hydrolysis or stability of ice cream subjected to heat shock.

    Pathogen detection system

Neogen’s ANSR (amplified nucleic single temperature reaction) system incorporates advances in DNA detection technology resulting in a system that is easy to use. ANSR offers the ability to economically process samples. It has a 10-minute assay for Salmonella and 18-minute assay for Listeria. The system uses isothermal amplification to create a level of molecular target material that can be detected using fluorescence. The system has exhibited low matrix effects with high sensitivity and provides both positive and negative results in minutes.

Software quickly detects adulterants in food

PerkinElmer’s Adulterant Screen software readily detects adulterants in food in seconds. Paired with its FT-IR and NIR systems, this solution can screen for food adulterants, confirm authenticity and can be combined with nutritional analysis. The system has a customized set-up to allow fast, effective implementation and does not require lengthy calibrations. A green light/red light results system enables easy implementation regardless of user knowledge level.

    In-line near infrared analyzers

ProSpect Analytical Technology’s in-line near infrared (NIR) analyzers can help dairy processors save money by working with their existing systems to optimize process control. The in-line NIR Model TD1 analyzer precisely measures constituents such as protein, moisture and fat in butter, cheese and other dairy applications in two process streams simultaneously. Working in tandem with the factory’s laboratory, the analyzers offer real-time continuous analysis to help produce a more consistent product, improve yield, increase traceability and reduce relabeling.

    Bioluminescence gives fast microbial detection

Weber Scientific’s MicroSnap methodology correlates relative light units (RLU) to colony forming units as found in traditional plating and colony counting techniques. Micro-Snap uses bioluminescence for the detection and correlation to numbers of bacteria. The test consists of an enrichment device and a detection device. Light is generated when enzymes that are characteristic of specific bacteria react with specialized substrates. The light generating signal is then quantified in a sensitive Ensure luminometer.

Moisture analyzers for process, quality control applications

Sartorius’ moisture analyzers deliver fast, easy and precise results for process and quality control applications.  The company manufactures a broad range of moisture analyzers.  The MA160 uses the thermogravimetric method to determine the moisture content of liquid, pasty and solid substances. The MA37 is a next-generation moisture analyzer that delivers fast, accurate results and is easy to operate.
