It's Show Time: PackEXPO and Worldwide Food Expo are right around the corner. PackEXPO is in Las Vegas this year, and our preview story looks at the latest tamper evidence and security features being offered by packaging suppliers.

Meanwhile, Worldwide Food Expo has some exciting new features this year including a bottled water component and the Beverage Zone, which groups together suppliers that focus on the ever-broadening beverage categories. We’ve also got show dates and other details to help you plan your trips to Las Vegas and Chicago.

The biennial Worldwide Food Expo attracts more than 30,000 visitors, and features more than 1,200 exhibitors.

It's one of the largest trade shows in North America, and perhaps the most important to dairy processors, and this year, the Worldwide Food Expo will be bigger and more diversified than ever.

Throughout the year, the industry organizations that coordinate the event have had exciting news about new sponsors and new components like the International Bottled Water Assn., and the Beverage Zone, which includes the IBWA Bottled Water Pavilion, and has a focus on beverages of all kinds.

Then came word that dairy's important purchasing groups, Quality Chekd Dairies, and All Star Dairy Assn. had signed on as co-sponsors.

The latest news? Registration is up compared to 2001 figures, and 2001 pre-registration took place prior to the Sept. 11 attacks.

Expo '03 includes the co-located Food, Dairy & Beverage Exposition and the International Meat, Poultry & Seafood Exposition.

The addition of IBWA brings to the show the fastest-growing and most exciting segment of the beverage industry: bottled water. IBWA's Bottled Water Pavilion will be located in a key location on the South Hall. With suppliers to the bottled water, juice and milk industries now well represented at Expo, the sponsors are building a new Beverage Zone for these and other beverage exhibits. Packaging, processing, sweeteners, ingredients and vending are just a few of the areas of growth for the '03 show.

IBWA currently holds the leading convention and trade show for the bottled water industry each fall, attracting about 2,500 domestic and international attendees. In recent years, the IBWA trade show has filled more than 40,000 net square feet of exhibit space. IBWA will feature its exhibits in Expo's new Bottled Water Pavilion, and will also conduct its annual convention and meeting at the show, featuring a track of bottled water educational sessions and social events. IBWA will also continue to hold its annual convention and trade event on the off-year from Expo.

"IBWA members and exhibitors are very excited to be a part of Worldwide Food Expo, and look forward to a blockbuster event in 2003," said IBWA President Joe Doss. "This is the beginning of what we anticipate to be a long and fruitful partnership with Worldwide Food Expo."

The Food, Dairy & Beverage Exposition will also include the latest innovations for the dairy, frozen food, confection, and snack food industries. In addition to the new Beverage Zone, an exciting new floor layout will include dairy exhibits; frozen food exhibits; confection, chocolate and snack pavilion and exhibits; and the Product Development Pavilion.

The biennial event attracts more than 30,000 industry leaders from 150 countries to see the largest North American display of food industry suppliers in one location. Attendees will view the innovations of more than 1,200 exhibitors in 1.2 million sq ft of floor space, and attend more than 60 educational workshops emphasizing new technologies in the food processing industry.

Dairy processors will get a look at the latest innovations in filling machinery, and then talk to a supplier of shrink sleeve material while also comparing the latest chocolate or vanilla offerings from the most established suppliers in the business.

Conference Programs

In addition to more than a square mile of exhibits, Worldwide Food Expo offers an impressive slate of conference programming covering the latest technical, marketing and policy issues related to the dairy industry.

Visitors to this year's Expo, can choose from an expanded selection of dairy programming sponsored by the IDFA, All Star Dairy Association, Quality Chekd Dairies and leading experts. There will be cutting-edge beverage workshops from Beverage Marketing Corp., the latest on milk marketing from the Milk Processor Education Program (MilkPEP), the conference of the IBWA, and a frozen food track from the American Frozen Food Institute. One badge gets attendees into any of the educational sessions.

In addition, IDFA will hold a special Health Claims Workshop immediately before Expo at the Chicago Hilton & Towers. This meeting requires separate registration, but attendees will receive complimentary passes to Worldwide Food Expo. Look for details here and on the IDFA website.

Conference programming actually kicks off a day before the opening of the Expo on Tuesday Oct. 28., with an 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. session on compelling health claims of dairy products. MilkPEP board members will also meet on Tuesday.

Wednesday morning's programming includes a session on high-tech cheese plants, a discussion of the need for dairy standards, and an informative session on the latest nutritional science regarding dairy and weight loss. Thursday morning highlights include a case study on building a probiotic dairy product, a program on HACCP certification for dairy professionals, and a discussion on milk's position in foodservice, the effects of long shelf life on milk availability, and new research on milk vending.

Friday's programming includes IDFA's Washington Insider Breakfast, and sessions on high tech milk and cheese plants, new tools for measuring plant efficiency, and milk price regulations.

Also on Friday morning, the Water Quality Assn.'s Conference will feature a session on membrane and ozone system design & application for dairy & bottled water operations. This presentation reviews UF and RO membranes for typical dairy plant operations with a comprehensive overview of integrating membrane and ozone technologies for producing bottled water.

Throughout Worldwide Food Expo, special sessions called "Dairy Tech," "Food Tech" and "Meat Tech" will also feature 20-minute technical papers from equipment and ingredient suppliers offering new technology to the food processing industry.
