    8 new dairy products to celebrate June Dairy Month

    June is National Dairy Month and the perfect time to celebrate all the good things about dairy foods and beverages. They are nutritious and versatile. June is a great time to try out new dairy products too. We’ve gathered eight of our favorites, including new cheese, butter, yogurt, milk and ice cream.

    United States of Dairy

    In 2014 there were 1,267 dairy plants manufacturing one or more dairy products. Every state had at least one dairy plant except Wyoming, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Note: the map does not count plants that only process fluid milk.

    Organic Valley, LaFarge, Wis., introduced organic snacking cheese for adults. The Snack Sticks are available in medium Cheddar and Pepper Jack varieties and are packaged in individually-wrapped sticks for on-the-go convenience. Each 0.75-ounce stick contains 5 grams of protein. The cheese is available nationwide in natural food stores, food cooperatives and major grocery chains, with a suggested retail price of $5.99 per 6-pack.

    Icelandic-style organic yogurt maker Smari, Petaluma, Calif., added new peach and coconut flavors to its regular line of yogurts. All Smari yogurts contain 17 to 20 grams of protein per 6-ounce cup (depending on the flavor). Read more about this product here.

    Cottage cheese is getting a makeover. Artisa fine curd cottage cheese, produced by Smith Dairy Products Co., Orrville, Ohio, is a new all-natural and slow-cooked cottage cheese that has a creamy, fine-curd texture and features fruit on the bottom. It’s packaged in a transparent cup so the consumer can see the product inside. Read more about this product here

    Introducing a new Chef's Splendor line, Prairie Farms, Carlinville, Ill., added three new limited-edition summer milks. The flavored milk comes in sea salt caramel, dark chocolate truffle and vanilla chai latte varieties. It's sold in quart-sized cartons for a suggested retail price of $2.39. The milk contains 220 to 250 calories, 4.5 to 6 grams of fat, 37 to 38 grams of sugar and 8 to 9 grams of protein per cup serving, depending on the flavor. The summer milks are available through August at retail outlets throughout the Midwest.

    Be Well Nutrition Inc., New Orleans, La., released a third flavor and redesigned packaging for Iconic, its line of on-the-go protein drinks. The drinks are marketed as an easy snack or workout recovery beverage. The line now consists of these flavors: chocolate truffle, vanilla bean and Cafe au Lait, the newest flavor. The protein drink contains 20 grams of grass-fed protein (from milk protein concentrate), 130 calories, and 3 grams of sugar (from organic blue agave) per 12-ounce serving. It also contains vitamin B-12 for energy. 

     The company updated its packaging by moving into a plastic HDPE bottle and increased the size from 11 to 12 ounces. The suggested retail price remains $3.49 per bottle. The product is sold in the Gulf South Region but we will be expanding throughout the Southwest/Midwest this year, according to the company.

    Edy's Ice Cream, a Nestlé brand, Wilkes-Barre, Pa., launched a Frozen Custard line, available at retailers nationally. Frozen custard is known to be extra thick and creamy. The new line is available in six flavors, including chocolate malt, mint cookies N' cream and peanut butter pie. See the rest of the flavors and learn more here.

    Englewood Cliffs, N.J. -based Unilever's Magnum Ice Cream adds two new bar varieties, including Double Peanut Butter. The peanut butter bar is made with peanut butter ice cream and peanut buttery sauce, with Belgian Chocolate. Read more about the new additions here.

    Finlandia, Parsippany, N.J., known for its cheese products, is now importing butter in 7-ounce blocks of salted and unsalted varieties. The milk is produced on family-owned farms in Finland. The butter contains no artificial ingredients, no added hormones and is made with non-GMO ingredients. It’s available nationwide for a suggested retail price of $3.49.
