    Cheese sales growth, while not explosive, continues to show steady year-over-year gains. For the 52 weeks ending Jan. 25, the natural cheese category saw a 2% increase in dollar sales to $21 billion and a 2% rise in unit sales to 5.2 billion, according to Circana.

    Overall, it has been a strong past 52 weeks for cheese, especially when looking at the natural cheese category. There were some pockets of weakness however, mainly the processed cheese and grated cheese subcategories, according to Chicago-based market research firm Circana’s data for the 52 weeks ending Jan. 26.

    Perhaps the unprecedented warmer fall weather in much of the United States was to blame for the melting of unit sales for frozen novelties and ice cream. Whatever the cause, only a few ice cream brands saw increases at the end of 2012.
