New technology in warehouse automation and cold storage

    October 20, 2015

    Robotic material handling solution

Cimcorp’s MultiPick is a fully automated, robotic material handling solution. It precisely controls the entire material flow of a distribution center or dispatch area and provides accuracy, rapid handling, flexible use of space, easy cleaning and improved labor savings. The solution can handle a variety of standard crates within a single system and a range of functions, from goods receiving and buffering to picking, replenishment, order consolidation, palletizing, loading and dispatch. The system integrates into an array of applications and is computer-controlled, allowing for the automatic operation to collect vast amounts of data and execute detailed analysis of both dispatch operations and production planning.

    Refrigerated facility expansions

Interstate Warehousing, a Tippmann Group co., completed expansions at two of its public refrigerated warehouse facilities. The Franklin, Ind., facility added 309,000 square feet and more than 46,000 pallet positions to the facility, while the Murfreesboro, Tenn., warehouse, near Nashville, added 156,000 square feet and more than 23,000 new pallet positions. These two expansions will provide more storage and distribution options for the company’s customers in the Indianapolis and Nashville markets, and bring its nationwide capacity to more than 100 million cubic feet of temperature-controlled storage space.

    Warehouse execution system

Westfalia Technologies’ Savanna.NET Warehouse Execution System is a unique warehousing software solution that combines a tightly integrated warehouse management system and warehouse control system into a single application. The system is designed to help manufacturers and distributors direct, control and optimize internal material flow and order picking.

    Tote loading systems

Quest Industrial’s tote loading systems for the dairy industry feature end-of-arm tooling (EOAT), designed specifically for the product it picks. The tote loader or bulk container loader is fast, effective and can be incorporated into almost any production line. The system is capable of picking and placing several different sizes, shapes and textures of product. Additionally, the bulk container loader/collator system can place slip sheets between layers if needed. A special EOAT is available for robotic cells that are completely pumpless, with no holes or vacuum tubes and no mess. Every system is designed with USDA approved materials for washdown environments, is open and easily cleanable.

    Public refrigerated warehouse

US Cold Storage, a public refrigerated warehouse, stores cooler and freezer food items for big-name companies, and also helps to distribute the product. It has 35 facilities across the United States. Two of the company’s warehouses in Tulare, Calif., handle everything from super sacks of whey protein to finished refrigerated butter. These USDA-, FDA- and BRC-certified facilities offer dry, refrigerated and frozen storage at temperatures ranging from -20°F to +70°F.

Design-build firm installs an AS/RS system

ESI Group specializes in facility design, engineering and construction for the food and beverage industry. It recently built a 83,500-square-foot plasma logistics center for a pharmaceuticals company. The facility consists of a 90-foot-tall automated storage and retrieval system rack-supported freezer utilizing three SR Machines capable of storing approximately 5,000 pallets at -35 degree celsius. Automated cranes, conveying and robotics system minimize the amount of time the employees have to spend in the cold environment and track the location of pallets, cases and bottles while in the building.

Compact automated storage and retrieval system

The Intelligrated OLS shuttle system is an efficient, scalable automated storage and retrieval system that provides quick access to cartons, totes and cases in a compact footprint. Ideal for high-volume distribution operations with short order cycle times, the system can store and retrieve a variety of product types and carton sizes from single-deep to quadruple-deep storage using a range of interchangeable load handlers. The system can operate in chilled environments, increasing storage density and helping optimize goods-to-operator order fulfillment, just-in-time inventory management, and product sequencing and buffering in cold-storage dairy applications.
