From plant-based almond milks to oat and soy — the Top 3 segments in the category — global sales of dairy alternatives were valued at $32.7 billion in 2024 and are expected to reach $66.9 billion in 2030, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.7%, states Grand View Research.
When looking at alternatives to traditional milk, as defined by Chicago-based market research firm Circana, one category clearly stands out: kefir. Sales of the refrigerated beverages are red hot, with dollar sales rising 23% year over year (YoY) to $211 million during the 52-week period ending June 15. This figure was bested by unit sales, which increased 26% YoY to 55 million.
Two-thirds of U.S. shoppers said they have consumed milk in the past month. Additionally, when looking for a good source of protein, 32% of U.S. shoppers said they look for packaged foods that contain dairy, according to a 2025 report from St. Louis-based Nextin Research by MarketPlace.
Circana reports that in U.S. multi-outlets and convenience stores for the 52 weeks ending Aug. 11, the overall milk category notched $19.6 billion in dollar sales at a slight 1.2% decrease over the prior year. In the “all other” refrigerated milk segment, however, it was near-perfect fall sunshine with 21.2% growth and $252 million in sales.
