Further, data indicate that yogurt is the fastest-growing segment in the dairy category, with sales figures suggesting that growth is driven largely by the explosion of specialty yogurts, which include regional recipes, flavors for children and functional formulations.
Alpina Foods LLC, Miami, is the recently established U.S. subsidiary of Alpina, a leading dairy-producing company in South America with global headquarters in Colombia. For almost a decade, the company has been importing an array of Hispanic-style dairy products into the United States. In 2012, Alpina will begin manufacturing yogurt from its newly built plant in Batavia, N.Y. This opens doors for innovations that will help grow its consumer base beyond the U.S. Hispanic population.

Chobani, Norwich, N.Y.,announced on Nov. 16 that it is exporting its Greek yogurt to Australia and Canada. Earlier in the month, it announced plans to build a $100 million state-of-the-art, high-capacity production facility in Twin Falls, Idaho, on 200 acres of agricultural and industrial land. It has a plant in South Edmeston, N.Y.
