The Food and Drug Administration approved the use of zero-calorie sweeteners made from the natural herb stevia for use in food and beverages, The Wall Street Journal reported late Wednesday on its Web site. Soon after, Coca-Cola Co. said it launched Sprite Green, which uses a form of stevia called Truvia, co-developed with Cargill Inc., and two Odwalla juice drinks using Truvia. PepsiCo Inc. is also expected to launch drinks using stevia as a sweetener, according to the Journal.
