Last month FDA took the first step toward updating the federal standards of identity for yogurt by publishing a three-year-old National Yogurt Assn. petition as a notice of proposed rulemaking. FDA will take public comments for 90 days on the petition, which seeks to establish a new yogurt standard of identity to replace the separate standards for yogurt, lowfat yogurt and nonfat yogurt. The deadline for comment is Oct. 1.
