Dairy owner, and Illinois gubernatorial candidate Jim Oberweis has been accused of hiring a subcontractor who paid janitorial workers $3.50 an hour to clean Oberweis ice cream and dairy stores.

Oberweis calls it "a smear campaign" waged by an activist group that has taken offense to his brash political stance on illegal immigration.

The Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights did indeed hold a press conference at which two Hispanic workers said they were paid $350 each for about 100 hours of work after being told they would actually earn $700. Oberweis Dairy issued a press release saying it never knowingly employed illegal aliens, and the company's chairman said the press conference was about injuring his campaign rather than protecting immigrant rights.

"This is why good people do not want to be involved in politics," he said.
