Taking place at Union Square Park on Capitol Hill, the popular summertime celebration provided attendees with America’s favorite and newest ice cream flavors, floats and novelties.

The Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act was previously approved by the U.S. House Education and Workforce Committee with a bipartisan vote of 24-10 in February. The bill now awaits passage by the full Senate and the full House of Representatives.

“On behalf of America’s dairy processors and producers, IDFA applauds President Trump’s announcement today that the United States and the United Kingdom have reached the terms for a significant trade deal between our two markets that promises to expand access for U.S. agricultural goods, reduce tariffs, and remove barriers to trade," said IDFA President and CEO Michael Dykes.

The goal of the Commitment is to eliminate the use of Red 3, Red 40, Green 3, Blue 1, Blue 2, Yellow 5, and Yellow 6 in any milk, cheese, and/or yogurt products sold to K-12 schools for reimbursable school meals by July 2026. 

In a hearing before the U.S. Senate Agriculture Committee, lawmakers, nutrition experts, and school officials emphasized the need to restore whole and reduced-fat (2%) milk to federal school meal programs.

The dairy industry always takes on its fair share of competition. Whether it is plant-based products, marketing campaigns claiming dairy is “unhealthy,” H5N1 bird flu, labor challenges, and more, dairy is really holding up well.

The bill would allow for whole (3.25%) and reduced-fat (2%) milk to once again be served in school cafeterias.

Mexico and Canada, U.S. dairy’s top two global trading partners representing more than 40% of U.S. dairy exports, each imported record values of dairy at $2.47 billion and $1.14 billion respectively.
