Bemis Corp. offers a wide range of packaging machinery under the Curwood brand, some of which has applications for cheese. These include the FlexVac 2000 HS continuous motion die train, the Pathfinder die train indexing machine, the FlexVac continuous motion die wheel, and the 220-R die-less indexing machine.
Northvale, N.J.-based Westfalia Separator’s newly developed series of HyVOL separators and clarifiers offer sealing technology designed to be wear-free and requires no water for operation. The Westfalia hydrohermetic seal uses the milk itself as a seal, leading to efficiency, and long-life operation.

The Horizon from Stoelting, LLC is a horizontal single cylindrical enclosed vat designed to obtain maximum yields and uniform cutting. The Horizon is a single horizontal shaft and drive, offered in a range of sizes (from 7,500 to 75,000 lb cap) along with options such as whey screen for specialty cheeses and steam or hot water heating. “Optiset” coagulation sensor and PLC–based vat automation ensure consistent product and maximum return on investment.
Cheese processors requiring automated vacuum pouch sealing can now take advantage of Multivac’s B400 belted chamber system. The B400 features Multivac’s hygienic design with vacuum ports built into the lid and retractable side skirts for easy cleaning. The height-adjustable seal bars are water cooled and bi-active, making the system ideal for shrink bag applications.
Stacked Busch vacuum pumps and a built-in Busch booster pump assure quick air evacuation. Equipped with Multivac’s advanced MC96 II controller, the B400 also offers special vacuum programming to suit the packaging requirements for wet products or cheeses with holes. Other features include an internal trim waste removal system with trim cart and an optional ribbed conveyor for rounded products. The B400 comes pre-wired for optional integration with downstream shrink tunnels.
The new Permeable Darfresh from Cryovac brings pack differentiation, product visibility, prolonged shelf life and the possibility of cheese curing in a vacuum pack. Permeable Darfresh top and bottom webs feature regulated permeability to suit the specific needs of gassing cheeses. These thermoformable, fully coextruded rigid films include three different top webs: standard, high profile and highly permeable. They are designed to run on dedicated Darfresh CD and RCD machines. The new webs are designed to pack hard and semi-hard cheeses that release various levels of carbon dioxide during their life cycle, such as Emmental, Edam, Tilsit, Asiago, Gorgonzola, Roquefort or blue cheese. The regulated permeability of this new packaging limits the entrance of oxygen in the pack – thus preserving product quality – while allowing the carbon dioxide to escape – thus enabling the cheese curing process to continue naturally.

Admix introduces LiquiShear that provides the processing power of a bottom-entry, high-speed blender with an optional integrated powder induction system to feed powders, solids and semi-solids into the blender. On its own, the basic Admix LiquiShear blending module features a low-maintenance, double mechanical seal, a removable manway dump grid, a combination filter and vent, and a CIP spray ball.
Tetra Pak Cheese and Powder Systems (Tetra Pak CPS) has conducted extensive research and development in order to introduce the Casein-Fat Standardizer (CFS). The CFS is a cheese milk blending system that uses continuous product testing and closed loop control to optimize the Casein/Fat (C/F) Ratio of cheese milk. Optimizing the C/F Ratio in the cheese vat improves yield, provides consistent quality, and maximizes economic profit.
