Life has changed and traditional food safety systems are no longer enough to ensure the safety of global food supply.  Increasingly governments are moving to science based approaches using the risk analysis paradigm to reduce the risk of their populations being exposed to foodborne disease from both domestic and imported agricultural products. The use of risk analysis framework enables decision makers to remain transparent and have a science-based method that can be utilized to keep the food supply and consumers safe.

The increasing complexity of these methods has created a need to educate food safety and other public health professionals about food safety risk analysis and the tools and techniques required to apply this approach.

The risk analysis program gradually introduces participants to general risk analysis language and principles then guides the participants as they develop a more in-depth understanding of risk management, risk assessment, and risk communication through lectures and provision of real world examples.  These examples target food safety hazards from around the globe.

Participants are actively engaged in breakout working groups in which they apply newly formed skills which addressing food safety concerns in their respective countries.  As the participants progress through the training modules they learn about both qualitative and quantitative approaches to addressing both foreign and domestic problems.  They also target the legal requirements in the US and other countries that require such approaches.  Refresher and Advanced quantitative risk analysis methods are available for those who are more involved in the modeling aspects associated with risk assessment.
