I anxiously awaited the Liberation Day announcement thinking we would finally “know” what was going to happen, but I quickly realized that the announcement made that day was just the first move in a long and intense chess game, or it was just the lighting of a fuse and we have no idea how long that fuse is or what it is attached to. 

Featuring festive food, a robust cattle judging contest, educational seminars, career connections and a large exhibitor hall with more than 700 exhibitors showcasing cutting-edge technology and the latest dairy equipment, the 57th Annual World Dairy Expo (WDE), taking place Oct. 1-4 at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, Wis., was buzzing with activity around the theme, “The Golden Age.”

The outlook for U.S. dairy products in 2025 varies by product. The two with the most-clear trajectories are cheese and skim powders (nonfat dry milk (NFDM)/skim milk powder (SMP)).

The exchange of letters contained in this agreement formalize protections for U.S. cheese exports to Chile, which make up over half of all U.S. dairy exports to Chile and exceeded $55 million in 2023.

Dairy exports will outpace imports though.

However, competition to provide protein to Southeast Asia is strong, and not just from dairy companies.

While it is typically obvious when a team wins, loses or ties (although ties are a rarity in sports these days), in the commodity export world, a win depends on how you define it. 

In 2022, China was ranked No. 1 in U.S. exports of agricultural products. The total export value has increased significantly every year since 2018, rising 14% most recently from 2021 to 2022. 

The U.S. dairy industry is increasingly reliant on export markets for growth and profitability.

With ever-increasing pressure on supply chains to improve cost structure and better optimize processes, a major focus has been on improving efficiencies. This includes the use of inland ports.
