After three days of intense competition, a rich, nutty, cow’s milk cheese has been named the 2026 World Champion Cheese. The cheese, Beemster Royaal Grand Cru, is made by CONO Kaasmakers in Westbeemster, Netherlands.
When Dairy Foods headed off to Green Bay, Wis., on a snowy Tuesday in early March, I couldn’t envision how much fun I’d have attending my first cheese contest which was held March 4-6 at the Resch Expo.

This year’s judging team includes 38 of the nation’s top cheese graders, cheese buyers, dairy science professors, and researchers hailing from 15 U.S. states.

Dairy Business Builder grants encourage dairy processors to pursue innovative projects.

More than three dozen dairy businesses located across the upper and lower Midwest are receiving Dairy Business Builder grants totaling $3.2 million in allocated funding. The grant program is administered by the Dairy Business Innovation Alliance (DBIA), a partnership between the Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association (WCMA) and the Center for Dairy Research (CDR) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Several won multiple awards at the World Dairy Expo Championship.

This year's contest received a record number 1,560 entries for cheese, butter, fluid milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, ice cream, sour cream, sherbet, cultured milk, sour cream dips, whipping cream, whey and other products from dairy processors throughout North America
WCMA’s program will offer personalized consultative services to support Wisconsin dairy businesses.

WCMA’s programming is supported by a $50,000 grant from the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection through the Wisconsin Initiative for Agricultural Exports (WIAE).
The funds support the Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association’s industry education and scholarship programs, the World and U.S. Championship Cheese Contests and university dairy training centers.
