Schreiber Foods Inc., Green Bay, Wis., will close its cream cheese facility in north St. Louis over the summer, laying off more than 200, as it moves production to lower-cost facilities. The closing will shut the last remaining former local operation of Raskas Foods Inc., which Schreiber acquired in 2002.
Deborah Van Dyk, the company's vice president of industry and regulatory affairs, said Schreiber faced higher operating costs at the facility.
"The other factor to consider was the fact that we didn't own that building," she said.
Schreiber would have had to invest money to renovate the aging facility if the company wanted to stay, she said.
