Details: Carvel Corp., the nation's first retail ice cream franchise, has introduced 98% fat-free ice cream sandwiches into its 400 franchises and 6,000 supermarket outlets. The new Flying Saucer consists of Carvel's fat-free vanilla ice cream sandwiched between two low-fat chocolate wafers. First in the industry with a round ice cream sandwich, Tom Carvel introduced the original Flying Saucer ice cream sandwich in 1951. He was also one of the original founders of the low-fat frozen dessert industry back in the early 1970s with the healthful product lines Thinny Thin, a low-calorie, low-fat frozen dietary dessert, and LoYo, a frozen yogurt dessert.
