A new transparent cap developed by Elopak is helping a leading European airline reduce food waste and comply with strict regulations that prohibit transporting open containers of liquid products across international borders.
When airline personnel cannot tell whether milk and juice cartons with standard caps have been opened, they must dispose of sealed cartons to assure full compliance with regulations. But the transparent Pure-Twist X cap makes it easy for cabin attendants to see if a carton seal has been broken or not.
The Pure-Twist X caps were introduced on one-liter Diamond with Curve cartons produced by Elopak for German juice manufacturer albi GmbH & Co. The caps were developed by Elopak Feature Systems (FES) in Germany with Bericap, and produced by Bericap.
Elopak FES conducted testing to develop a configuration that cuts the carton under the cap when it is opened. The cut removes the white carton board so a “black” hole is visible through the semi-transparent plastic. This offers integrity, safety and stock control benefits to the catering and leisure industries, as well as consumers who buy in bulk for multiuse purposes, such as parties.
“Design simplicity that adds key functional benefits enabled our customer Albi to extend its product portfolio and win a major catering contract,” said Hans Lippuner, Elopak’s commercial manager FES. “This solution, which meets a very important and specific customer legal and safety requirement, has also attracted the attention of other customers who see the added value for aseptic products.”
The Pure-Twist X transparent cap won a highly commended award in the Best Cap and Closure category at the Beverage Innovation 2009 awards in Munich in September.Elopak is one of the world’s leading suppliers of packaging systems for liquid food products.
