Bel Brands opens a cheese plant; Byrne Dairy opens a yogurt plant

Executives from Bel’s parent company in Paris were joined by federal, state and local political leaders and French Embassy representatives in South Dakota for a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Bel Brands USA cut the ribbon today at its new $144 million cheesemaking plant in Brookings, S.D. In upstate New York, family-owned Byrne Dairy celebrated the opening of its yogurt facility.

Nestle, Arla strengthen positions in Latin America

Nestlé Mexico will finance production and infrastructure and provide technical assistance in the milk and whey supply chains. Arla intends to capture market share in the world's 4th largest dairy market.

Nestlé Mexico plans to invest about $53 million to increase milk production in Mexico. Arla takes an ownership position in Brazil’s Vigor.

Yoplait shows gains in volume, sales and market share in Q1

While net sales for General Mills' U.S. Retail segment dipped 5% from the prior year, the Snacks, Yoplait and Small Planet Foods divisions achieved net sales gains.

"In U.S. Retail, our Yoplait yogurt business returned to growth, with volume, sales, and market share gains,” said General Mills Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Ken Powell in a statement today.

Yoplait sales tumble 3% but snacks rise 6% at General Mills

Net sales for General Mills as a whole rose just 1% to $17.9 billion. The Snacks and the Small Planet Foods divisions each saw sales rise 6%.

Sales of Yoplait dropped 3% to $1.312 billion in the year ended May 25, 2014, General Mills reported today.

Daisy Brand broke ground last week on a sour cream facility in Wayne County, Ohio. The 200,000 square-foot state-of-the-art facility to be built in the city of Wooster is expected to be fully operational by late 2015. The $116 million project is expected to add 89 jobs
