• U.K.-based Tate & Lyle has formed Tate & Lyle ANZ Pty Ltd., a new subsidiary to serve the Australian and New Zealand food and beverage industry. This forms part of Tate & Lyle’s Global Food Ingredients Group, which was established in 2005 to focus on global food ingredients marketing and maximizing growth opportunities. The new subsidiary will market Tate & Lyle’s value-added food ingredients and Splenda® sucralose.

• Roquette America, Keokuk, Iowa, has announced a price increase for all non-contracted specialty product increase prices due to significant increases in corn, energy, packaging, chemicals and other key cost inputs. In addition, all shipments will remain subject to freight increases and RA’s fuel surcharge program.

• Consumption of milk fortified with specific micronutrients — zinc, iron, selenium, copper, vitamin A, vitamin C and vitamin E — significantly reduces diarrhea and acute lower respiratory illness among children in developing countries, according to researchers from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the Center for Micronutrient Research at Annamalai University in India. The children who received fortified milk had fewer episodes of diarrhea and pneumonia.

• Chocolate manufacturer Barry Callebaut is hosting the U.S. National Competition for the World Chocolate Masters from May 19 to 20 at the French Pastry School in Chicago. National competitions are held in more than 20 countries, where chocolatiers, pastry chefs and other chocolate professionals must compete against each other on a national scale. The winner of the U.S. National Competition goes on to represent the United States in the 2008 World Chocolate Masters in Europe.

• Palatinose™, a functional carbohydrate produced by German-based Palatinit, has been awarded the silver prize in the Ingredient of the Year 2006 competition, part of the recent Food Ingredients Russia exhibition in Moscow. Palatinose took silver in the best product distribution of the Ingredient of the Year 2006 awards.
