A new vending technology that grabbed headlines last month could shorten the supply chain for ice cream by about 99%.

Taunton, Mass.-based MooBella has invented a computer-controlled vending machine that makes ice cream one scoop at a time, flash freezing it in 10 seconds. MooBella unveiled its machine at a tech trade show recently and got lots of looks, along with a couple articles in USA Today and the subsequent ripples of media attention.

Using aseptic ice cream mix and a blast freezer that blows air into the mix, the Moo-Bella machines offer twelve flavors and five inclusions including cookie and candy pieces. The entrepreneurs behind the idea are a mix of Harvard business school types and real-life engineers who have worked in food production.

A visit to the company’s website indicates that there are no machines on location yet, but stay tuned.
