The traditional method of powering a conveyor belt is with externally mounted motor and gearbox. A new conveyor drive design introduced in the early 1980’s, which incorporates the motor, gear reducer, and all drive components inside the drive roller, presented a unique belt drive solution with numerous benefits. However, a number of design issues became evident and required significant investment in R&D in order to address these challenges. This white paper reveals the source of the design limitations and details of the VDG two-year study that has succeeded to the development of the new advanced drum motor design offered today.
