    Value America is buying the flavors and ingredients business of Zipps Manufacturing, Cleveland. The transaction was expected to close March 30. Value America plans to fully integrate product lines and production out of its facility in New Berlin, Wis.

    In the coming year, Chr. Hansen will invest $7.8 million to expand capacity at its culture production facility in Pohlheim, Germany, where the company's meat and animal health cultures are produced. The expansion, scheduled for completion next spring, will be a state-of-the art production plant with capacity to support future market growth.

    Invensys has received two additional patents for the core technology of the company's award-winning Foxboro CFT50 Digital Coriolis mass flowmeter. The patents relate to the CFT50's ability to accurately measure traditionally difficult-to-handle materials and gas/liquid (two-phase) flow. The Digital Coriolis flowmeter technologies were developed through a collaborative program between the Foxboro Measurements and Instruments Division of Invensys Process Systems and Oxford University in the UK.

    FKI Logistex® has inked a $2.3 million deal with Preferred Freezer Services® to outfit the company's new freezer warehouse in Newark, N.J. The contract, which covers the implementation of a Condor™ aisle-changing crane system, will be the seventh between FKI Logistex and Preferred Freezer Services, a third-party logistics and freezer storage company specializing in seafood products.

    American Custom Drying Company announced the recent passing of the companies' founder and president, Richard L. Shipley, on Jan. 30 at the age of 89. Shipley started his American Casein Company in1957. In 1967, he founded a related business, American Custom Drying Company, when he perfected the process of spray drying casein into caseinate.

    Sidebar: First Haines Science Award Goes to Cornell Professor

    DAVIS, Calif.-The California Dairy Research Foundation recently presented Cornell University Professor David Barbano with the inaugural William C. Haines Dairy Science Award. The award was presented at the 7th Cal Poly Symposium on Advances in Dairy Product Technology held in March in Shell Beach, Calif., where Dr. Barbano also made a presentation on the commercialization of milk protein fractionation products as food ingredients.

    The William C. Haines Dairy Science Award was created to recognize individuals who, through their accomplishments in research and development in various fields, have made a significant contribution to dairy science and the betterment of the dairy industry and consumers of dairy products. It is named for William Haines, former v.p. of product innovation for Dairy Management Inc.
