Schreiber Foods is one of largest cheesemakers in the world, that consumers have never heard of, so it was quite the surprise to see Schreiber brand cheese cubes advertised at a special "cheap cheese" price in Chicago newspapers last month. As the holidays approached, Jewel Foods was selling several varieties of the cubed cheese for $2.50 a pound. Le Mars, Iowa, is working to keep Wells' Dairy from moving its corporate offices. After the ice cream maker began shopping for nearby sites for a new $30 million headquarters, Le Mars and county officials offered up incentive packages to keep the Blue Bunny in Le Mars. A Canadian consumer group says Canadians are paying more than necessary for milk which is sold under a monopolistic system wherein producers set the price. "The current regulated pricing system allows dairy producers to collect an extra $100. per Canadian household this year," says Bruce Cran, president of the Consumers' Association of Canada. Friendly Ice Cream Corp., Wilbraham, Mass. recently unveiled a $750,000 conference center at its corporate headquarters. The new facility will serve as a learning center for restaurant-level and district management personnel from 15 states. The family-dining chain and ice cream manufacturer said it had garnered 11 consecutive quarters of positive same-store sales. For its third quarter ended Sept. 28, Friendly's comparable-store sales rose 3.5%. MaggieMoo's International LLC, Columbia, Mo., has hired a new chief executive and announced plans recently to expand the super-premium ice cream franchiser by more than 10-fold over the next three to four years. Maggie Moo's, which calls its retail outlets "treateries," tapped an executive of Panera Bread to head the franchise operator as it strives to open 1,000 stores by 2007. Jonathan R. Jameson, former senior vice president and chief operating officer of Denny's Restaurant Inc. and most recently senior vice president and chief brand officer at Panera, has been charged with introducing new products and capturing a larger scoop of the specialty ice cream market. Cold Stone Creamery of Scottsdale, Ariz. leads the pursuit of market share, followed by Marble Slab Creamery of Houston and MaggieMoo's.
