INTERNATIONAL: Melon/lemon/baobab drinking yogurt

Provenance has been a buzzword in the food industry for the past several years and momentum behind it continues to build. Connecting ingredients to a particular

place of origin has become a mainstream marketing strategy, but in the dairy category, it is usually related to local milk production.

In Sweden, Arla Foods shows that it is possible to make provenance have a more global reach. This dairy processor’s Touch of Africa range includes unique ingredients that are native to that continent. The Melon/Lemon/Baobab Drinking Yogurt features the fruit from the baobab tree, which is native to southern Africa. This tart fruit complements the mild taste of sweet cantaloupe melon and sharp lemon.

“Baobab is a fascinating fruit that is only just beginning to filter into new food and beverage products,” says Tom Vierhile, innovation insights director, Datamonitor, New York. “Baobab fruit pulp is said to have significantly more antioxidants than fruits such as blueberries and raspberries and this could help move it into a host of unique applications. Baobab was only recently cleared for use in food products in some markets, like the United States, so new product launches are just starting to pick up.”
Another variant in the Touch of Africa line is Pomegranate/Hibiscus/Cardamom.
