In memorium

Longtime dairy executive Lewis W. “Lee” Stannardpassed away on Sept. 18 at his home in Iowa City, Iowa. Mr. Stannard worked for Pet Dairy, Southland Corp. and Hawthorn Mellody. He purchased the Dunhill personnel firm in Iowa City in 1980 and placed executives in management positions at dairy processing plants.

Mr. Stannard was born June 3, 1927 in Sparta, Wis., the son of Henry and Lela Stannard.  He grew up on the family dairy, Beaver Creek Dairy. He served in the U.S. Navy and then earned a degree in microbiology from the University of Minnesota. Mr. Stannard is survived by his four children: Bob, Bill, Barb (Althoff) and Shauna Marie; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

 

University honors CDI chairman

The University of California, Davis, honored Brian Pacheco, a fourth-generation dairyman from Kerman, Calif., with an “Award of Distinction” from the university’s College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CA&ES). Pacheco is chairman of the board of California Dairies Inc.

 

Dairy executives elected to frozen foods board

Executives from the dairy industry were among those elected to the board of directors of the National Frozen & Refrigerated Foods Association, Harrisburg, Pa.  John Larsen, Vice President BUGM Dairy/Refrigerated, Safeway, Inc. was re-elected as chairman of the board.

Scott Hawsof Land O’Lakes is chairman-elect.

Newly elected members of  the board of directors include Kristina Cole, WhiteWave Foods; Brigid Gilmore, Nestle U.S.A.; Ken Messick, GFA Brands/Smart Balance; Dan Nolan, Stremick’s Heritage Foods; Trenton Potts, Daisy Brand; and Ed Sullivan, Lactalis Retail Dairy, Inc. Among those elected to a second term on the board are Steve Ostrander, Crystal Farms, and James Walsh, H.P. Hood.

 

Sargento names agency

Sargento Foods Inc., Plymouth, Wis., appointed Advantage Sales and Marketing (ASM) as its sales and marketing agency across the United States. ASM will assume responsibility for Sargento headquarters and retail sales operations in the grocery, mass, club, drug and value channels.

 

New name, HQ for Smart Balance

Smart Balance Inc., is moving its corporate headquarters to Boulder, Colo., from Paramus, N.J., and changing its name to Boulder Brands Inc. The company established two reportable operating segments called Smart Balance (spreads, butter, grocery and milk) and Natural Brands (Earth Balance, Glutino and Udi’s). John Becker was promoted to Executive Vice President of Smart Balance. TJ McIntyre was promoted to Executive Vice President of Natural Brands.
