Flexicon Corporation

A Flexicon Weigh Batching System designed for mezzanines and other low headroom areas utilizes Low Profile Flexible Screw Conveyors configured with motor drives at the inlet end of the conveyor, reducing height and width requirements at the discharge end. This automated system is comprised of eight low-profile conveyors fed by roof-mounted storage vessels, with each group of four conveyors feeding either of two gain-in-weight hoppers that gravity discharge through the mezzanine floor to a ribbon blender at ground level. A system controller starts and stops each conveyor to weigh ingredients in sequence, first at high feed rate for rapid filling, then at dribble feed rate, stopping material flow once the accurate batch weight has been gained by the hopper. System software automatically compensates for material-in-flight by stopping the conveyor in advance of attaining final batch weights. The enclosed, dust-free conveyors can reportedly handle products ranging from sub-micron powders to large pellets, including those that pack, cake, plug, seize, smear or fluidize, with no separation of blended products.

Koch Membrane Systems

Koch Membrane Systems, Inc. of Wilmington, Mass. has introduced its KOCHKLEEN® MSS solution. Formulated to protect membranes during off-line or long-term storage, KOCHKLEEN reduces system turnaround time following planned or unplanned system shutdowns. KOCHKLEEN MSS solution is a proprietary blend of anionic surfactant and organic acids specially formulated to prevent inorganic scale build-up and to both wet and maintain the electrolyte balance on the membrane surface. The surfactant helps the organic acids penetrate and protect the membrane pores during storage. The company is also offering the ABCOR® HFK ultrafiltration spiral module series. The ABCOR HFK membranes provide high yields for whey and milk processing. According to the company, the ABCOR HFK can increase revenues by thousands of dollars per year at a medium-sized processing plant.

Avery Dennison Printer Systems

A new high-speed RFID print/apply labeling system from Avery Dennison Printer Systems, the ALX RFID, encodes and prints RFID labels and automatically applies the encoded labels to cartons, cases and pallets. During the encoding process, the system "detects and rejects" miscoded or unreadable RFID labels. Faulty labels are rewound with spent media carrier onto the system's rewind apparatus. The system then encodes and prints the next label, and applies it to the targeted item. The ALX RFID also features "jump-the-bump" capability that enables users to meet RFID labeling mandates with greater economic efficiency by guarding against costly label damage during printing.

NewAge® Industries, Inc.

NewAge® Industries, Inc.'s Hytrel®-Lined PVC Tubing, is a co-extruded product that offers the performance features of two materials in one tube. Hytrel-Lined PVC Tubing is designed to offer the flexibility and durability of PVC tubing with a liner of inert, DuPont Dow Elastomers' Hytrel for resistance to oils, high temperatures, and gas permeability. A patented process molecularly bonds liner and jacket to make a virtually inseparable product. This cost-saving co-extrusion permits Hytrel-Lined PVC Tubing to be substituted for conventional reinforced PVC hose in many applications. The Hytrel polyester core offers internal resistance to chemical attack, abrasion, and contamination, along with a low adherence of particulates. The black PVC jacket provides excellent resistance to abrasion, moisture, and U.V. All ingredients are FDA-sanctioned for use with food contact surfaces, and the tubing withstands repeated autoclaving with no separation of layers.

Munson Machinery Company, Inc.

The Model 700-TH-20-SSJ Sanitary, Jacketed Rotary Batch Mixer gently blends batches of ingredients in parts as small as one per million with 100% uniformity in less than three minutes, while keeping materials heated or cooled. The mixer can be piped to an in-plant chiller to prevent heat-sensitive bulk products from agglomerating, clumping, degrading, smearing and/or sticking to contact surfaces of mixing and packaging machinery, or to the final consumer packaging, or to an in-plant steam, hot water or hot oil system to maintain elevated material temperatures during processing. The 3-A and USDA compliant unit reportedly evacuates 100% of the batch, and can be sanitized rapidly with no tools. Material contact surfaces are of 304 or 316 stainless, and the rotating drum has external, removable seals, while internal mixing flights are spaced for easy access and have polished welds with 0.25-inch (6mm) radii. Models range in capacity from 10 to 600 cu. ft. (0.28 to 17 cu. m) and are equally effective in blending of batches that comprise between 5 to 100% of rated capacity, obviating multiple mixers in some cases.

Elopak, Inc.

A new screw cap from Elopak, the Elo-Cap™ US, is being introduced by three Canadian dairies: Aurora, Nielson and Farmers. The cap has an inside pull-ring that makes gable-top cartons more tamper-evident. Dairies do not have to adjust their present cartons (standard cross-section or half-gallons) or filling equipment to use the Elo-Cap™ US. And since these caps use resin very efficiently, they are cost-effective even when resin prices are high. The new caps are available in a variety of colors to complement carton graphics.

FKI Logistex Manufacturing Systems

St. Louis, M.-based FKI Logistex® has a new Stainless Steel Conveyor designed to meet the needs of food and beverage manufacturers. With side frames built in 304 polished stainless steel and all fabricated parts available in stainless steel, the FKI Logistex Stainless Steel Conveyor can be wet-cleaned after production runs. Its corrosion-resistant construction reduces wear and tear and extends conveyor component life over traditional non-stainless designs. The conveyor operates at speeds up to 300 feet per minute, has a live load weight capacity of 70 lb. per foot, and can convey a variety of items, from shrink-wrapped packages to corrugated boxes. Also from FKI comes a new bumpless case turner, designed to gently handle and selectively turn fragile products requiring higher-speed case turning when moving into a palletizing operation. The bumpless case turner is now available as an upgrade to most of the FKI Logistex palletizer line, including the high-speed inline continuous-flow and low-speed row-forming models. The bumpless case turner employs patent-pending technology to create a speed differential under the cases that can selectively and accurately generate negative 90, positive 90, 180, and 270 degree case-turns.
