The California Milk Processor Board (CMPB) reports that California milk sales in 2002 were at their highest level in a decade. The 746 million gals sold last year also represents a 2% increase from 2001. The report did not address per-capita consumption. The CMPB also reports that its Licuados promotion has been quite successful. An eight-week study last fall, found that 93% of non-Latino consumers contacted said they would try to make the milk and fruit blended drinks at home. Mozzarella Fresca, Benicia, Calif. recently attained kosher certification. The company also won a bronze medal for its whole milk ricotta in the World Cheese Awards in London. Galloway Co., Neenah, Wis., a manufacturer of concentrated milk ingredients and crème liqueurs has undertaken a $5 million expansion project to meet demand for dairy bases to be used in dairy-based beverages. Finally, the Leahy-Snowe Organic Restoration Act has drawn a good deal of bi-partisan support according to a spokesman for Organic Valley Family of Farms. The legislation was introduced in February, just days after a rider attached to the federal appropriations bill created a loophole that weakens the feed requirements for organic poultry producers.
