Industry Pioneer John Davis Utterback 1918-2007

The founder of All Star Dairy Association, John Davis Utterback died in Los Altos, Calif., May 18. He was 88.

Born in Lawrenceburg, Ky. on August 10, 1918, Utterback founded All Star in 1958. At All Star, he served as President, CEO and Chairman of the Board and remained the driving force of the company for 43 years. Utterback was renowned for his entrepreneurial spirit and innovative thinking in product sales, marketing, purchasing, and packaging. He was an active member in many industry organizations including serving on the Board of Directors for Stop ‘N Go Foods from 1961 to 1976 and serving as Member Emeritus with the Tri-State Dairy Association (Va., N.C., S.C.) to which he belonged for over 40 years.

Utterback was a collector of fine art and antiques, enjoyed extensive travel in the U.S. and abroad and an avid fan of the University of Kentucky Wildcats. Most of all, he enjoyed spending close family time with his children and six grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Martha Janet Egley O’Brien Utterback and her two children, Martha O’Brien and Henry O’Brien; his first wife Agnes A. Utterback; his children James Davis Utterback and Patricia Ann Gebhardt.
